Dog Lifetime Health Plan

Caring for you beloved dog is a life-long commitment. Regular preventative health care throughout your dog's lifetime with regular visits to your family veterinarian is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your dog. The net result will be a reduction in the prevalence and impact of preventable disease and chronic diseases that shorten and detract from the life of your pet. Below are our recommendations for the life-long care of your dog.

Puppies, Under 12 Months of Age

  • Feed a premium puppy diet (please ask our staff for recommendations).
  • Comprehensive physical exam at approximately 8, 12 and 16 weeks.
  • DHP vaccines at 8, 12 and 16 weeks.
  • Intranasal Bordetella/Parainfluenza vaccine at 12 weeks.
  • Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks.
  • Leptospirosis vaccine-if your puppy will be camping, hunting or swimming.
  • Deworming at 8, 10, 12 and 14 weeks.
  • Begin monthly internal parasite prevention for heartworksm, tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms at 16 weeks.
  • Fecal examination for parasites at 16 weeks (Ova and parasties/Giardia Ag).
  • Spay and neuter at 6 months. Pre-anesthetic blood works and microchip placement is recommended. Re-test fecal is not on internal parasite prevention monthly.
  • Start flea and tick control if appropriate for lifestyle (discuss with our staff).
  • Begin regular home dental care by 12 weeks of age (discuss with our staff).

Adults, 1-7 Years of Age

  • Feed a premium adult diet (please ask our staff for recommendations).
  • Discuss proper weight for your dog with your veterinarian.
  • Comprehensive physical exam yearly.
  • Discuss appropriate vaccines for your dog's lifestyle.
  • DHP vaccine at ages 1 and 2, then every 3 years.
  • Rabies vaccine at 1 year, then every 2 years thereafter.
  • Intranasal Bordetella/Parainfluenza vaccine every 6-12 months.
  • Leptospirosis vaccine annually if your dog will be camping, hunting or swimming.
  • Heartworm test yearly.
  • Internal parasite preventative for heartworms, roundworms, tapeworms and hookworms year round.
  • Fecal examination for parasites every 6 months; yearly if on preventative (Ova and parasites/Giardia Ag).
  • Flea and tick control if appropriate for lifestyle (discuss with our staff).
  • Continue preventative dental care at home regularly (daily brushing with CET toothpaste is ideal).
  • Dental cleaning as needed.
  • Wellness blood work annually.

Golden Years, 7 or 8 Years and Older

  • Discuss age related diet changes that may be indicated (please ask your veterinarian for recommendations).
  • Discuss proper weight for your dog with your veterinarian.
  • Comprehensive physical exam every 6 months to 1 year.
  • DHPP vaccine every 3 years on alternative years from Rabies (discuss appropriate vaccines for age and lifestyle).
  • Rabies vaccine every 2 years on alternate years from DHP.
  • Intranasal Bordetella/Parainfluenza vaccine every 6-12 months.
  • Leptospirosis annually if your dog will be camping, hunting or swimming.
  • Heartworm test yearly/Internal parasite preventative year round.
  • Fecal examination for parasites every 6 months; yearly if on preventative (Ova and parasite/Giardia Ag).
  • Flea and tick control if appropriate for lifestyle (discuss with our staff).
  • Continue preventative dental care at home regularly. 
  • Dental cleanings as needed.
  • Senior wellness screening every 6-12 months.
  • Discuss ongoing health problems.
  • Discuss arthritis and pain management.
  • Thoracic and abdominal radiographs and/or ultrasound if indicated by physical exam or lab work.
