Bonnie Bee is a heartworm survivor! She is also sweet as can be. Lucky for Bonnie, her heartworm infection was detected with a routine heartworm test screening, before she developed symptoms.
Treatment involves 3 injections, a few weeks apart, as well as 6 weeks of strict rest. Treatment of heart worms can be risky, because the dying worms can cause acute inflammation in the lungs or cause a worm emboli- which can cause sudden death. Treatment also costs several hundreds of dollars. This is why it is so much better to prevent heart worms by giving a safe and relatively affordable once a month tablet. Happily, Bonnie did great during treatment. Her 6 month post-treatment heartworm test is negative, and she is expected to live a normal life.
